Dospat Dam Lake

Dospat Dam Lake is located in the heart of the marvelous Rhodopi Mountain, just next to the town of Dospat, about 82 km west of Smolyan. It is situated at 1,200 m above the sea level. Its 22,000 decares of water area make it the second biggest dam lake in Bulgaria. Nature around it is magnificent. When one passes the last turn on the road to Dospat, at the right side, just before the city of the same name, a glorious sight emerges in front of the eyes. When you look from its height, the first thought is that you have arived in paradise. The dam lake shines like an elmaz, while little houses and hotels have perched on the high slopes of the Western Rhodopi, just across the lake. Venerable forests of spruce and white pine-trees are all around, like a ring around the dam lake. The air is filled with the smell of resin. The Dospat lake is full of fish. Perch (Perca fluviatilis), carp (Cyprinus carpio), chub (Leuciscus cephalus), Chalcalburnus chalcoides, redfins (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) and trouts can be caught there. There are excellent conditions for sport and industrial fishing. Dam lakes of Vacha, Sarnitza, Beglika, Batak and Shiroka Polyana are close by.
