Karasura

The archeological site Karasura is being examined since 1981 by Bulgarian and German explorers. It is situated 6 km North-East from Chirpan at the South slope of Sredna Gora Mountain, at both naks of river Starata Reka in Stara Zagora direction. It includes the village hill Kaleto and the surrounding area, as well as the South hill Kayraka. The comparison between written sources and archeological facts localized in the end of 19-th century the Roman wayside station Karasura at the Kaleto. Three gates, ten towers, church and residential buildings, in and out of the fortified area, have been discovered. During the 11-th century the village has grown and spread on an area of 1,000 decares. Three Medieval churches have been discovered so far. The explorations have provided various material – different architectural elements, stone carved pylons, sculptures and culture monuments since before the Christianity, labor tools, coins. The collection of Medieval adornments is abundant. The discovered ceramic pottery from different ages includes more than 250 recovered utensils.
