The Valley of the Thracian Kings

The Valley of the Thracian Kings is a region between the Stara Planina Mountain and the Sredna Gora Mountain. It was very important strategic place because all the roads on the Balkans were crossing there in the past. During the first millennium B.C. the Odrysian tribes settled in the area. After archeological excavations more than 1000 mounds were found, but only 100 of them are studied. In 1992 – 1997 the Zaprianova, the Malkata, the Goliamata Arsenka, the Ostrusha, the Helvetsia and the Gabarska mounds were uncovered. In 2004 in the Shipka region another two tumulus tombs – near Svetitsa and Golqma Kosmatka, were found out. The archeologists found staggering for the Thracian culture treasure – a unique golden mask, golden ring, bronze armour and parts of a weapon.
