The village of Debelt

The village of Debelt is situated 25km from the city of Burgas. The village existed during the Roman Empire. Then its name was Deultum (meaning 'a place between two shores') and it was a lake port of Roman Thrace and a part of the military colony Flavia (the only Roman colony in current Bulgaria). A lot of archeological excavations have been made in the surroundings of the village. As a result, the remains of an ancient custom-house were found and among them about 60 lead seals and stamps, most of which were possession of Roman dignitaries, and two – of knyaz Boris I. The foundations of a palace and an old Roman bath were revealed as well. All found objects are exhibited in the local Archeological Museum. In 2002 the archeologists dug out a treasure, consisted of 100 silver coins of Constantine I, Constantine II, and 3 silver pendants as well. It is supposed that the treasure is from the middle of IV century. In 2005 in the area of the ancient village Deultum they found a church. The archeologists think that this is the church where knyaz Boris I was baptized and accepted the Christianity as an official religion of the country in 864.
