The Baldwin Tower

Baldwin's Tower erected not far away from the place where the Frenhisarska Gateway was situated, it was one of the three entrances of Tzarevetz (the south one). The name of this tower is related to the legend that in it was imprisoned and also found his death the Latin Emperor Baldwin of Flanders, captured by the Bulgarian Tsar Kaloyan, after the battle at Odrin in 1205. At the end of 13th century was built on of the town monasteries. The complex was connected to the only water supply equipment outside the walls of the citadel. The modern tower was built in 1930 under the project of architect Aleksandar Reshenov, on the analogy of the preserved medieval tower, situated in Cheveren. Except for the entrance, the mediaeval tower guarded a water depository.
