Celebration of Radnevo

The town of Radnevo is located in the eastern part of the Gornotrakiiska valley and is within the administrative borders of Stara Zagora district. Radnevo is a locus with a rich and ancient history. The first settlements, set up within the town’s current limits, are dated back to 4000 years in the past. This is evident by the numerous archeological sites in the area. During the Medieval Ages, after the creation of the Bulgarian state, the region was used as a buffer between Bulgaria and Byzanthium. One of the legends related to the founding of Radnevo itself tells of the story of Grandpa Radni, who, just before the year 1700, settled in the region, along with other Bulgarian settlers. In the year 1873, the construction of the St. Ivan Rilski church is initiated with donation funds. In the couple of years 1872-1873, the railway through the town is completed, leading to a booming growth of trade relations between the region and the town. In 1906, Radne Mahle (a previous name for the settlement) is renamed Radnevo village, whereas in 1911 Radnevo gains the rights of a county center. On September 7, 1964, Radnevo is proclaimed a town.
