The Fishermen’s village – Tutrakan

The Fishermen’s village is naturally formed fishermen’s hamlet along the Danube river valley, the town of Tutrakan. It is the only one of the kind in the regions and dates back to the years of the National Revival. Fishing is typical living for Tutrakan and the district, as traditionally entire families were occupied in fishing. In the beginning of the past century more than 5000 fishermen lived here, and the fishermen quay was constantly occupied by thousand boats. Today, the Fishermen’s village is located next to the church St. Nicholas at the Danube waterside in the northeastern part of the town. The originality pureness and Revival spirit of the Fishermen’s village reminds the generations this ancient living of their fathers, and tells the legend to the young men so that Tutrakan is even now having its importance as fishery and boat-construction center of Bulgaria at the Danube River. Here the visitors may learn the development of the fishing in Tutrakan and the adjacent lakes and swamps. This makes the ethnography museum important not only in national aspect.
