Hadji Dimitar (10 May 1840 – 18 July 1868)

Dimitar Nikolov Asenov, known as Hadji Dimitar, is one of the most prominent Bulgarian voivodes. He was born on 10 May 1840 in Sliven, and died as a hero, only 28 years of age, in a battle against the Turks on July 18 1868, near the Buzludja summit in the Shipchenska mountain. His death was glorified in one of the most popular and beatiful works of the famous Bulgarian revolutionary Hristo Botev. A stanza of the poem is written in golden letter on the door of Poetry in Paris. Dimitar was born in the family of the merchant Nikola and Marinka Asenovi. When he was 2 years old, went on a pilgrimage in Jerusalem and became a Hadji (pilgrim).
