Kyustendil Public Holiday

The town of Kyustendil is located in the westernmost part of Bulgaria, in the fertile Kyustendil valley. It is situated at the foot of the Osogovo Mountain, at altitude of 526 m. The archeological excavations in the region have proved it has been inhabited since ancient times. As a result of the long-year researches performed by specialists, a series of monuments of the material culture and art from the Roman and early Byzantine era have been found in the town and its vicinities. The town used to bear the name of Pautalia, Velbajd, Konstantinova Banya, today is known as Bulgaria’s Fruit Garden because of its fertile land and abundance of fruit trees. The town is one of Bulgaria’s most famous spa resorts. Its public holiday (March 21) has been celebrated officially since 1966. It is related to the day of the vernal equinox and the coming of spring.
