Kadin Bridge

Kadin bridge was built over the river of Struma, near the village of Nevestino, which is located some 14 km away from the town of Kystendil. The bridge is one of the greatest monuments on the Balkan Peninsula which has survived over the centuries of the Turkish yoke. According to an ancient inscription on a plate, built inside the bridge, it was constructed sometime between 1469 and 1470 by Ishak Pasha. An interesting legend tells it was built by three brothers, who worked hard all day, but at night the river destroyed everything they had managed to build in the day. They though they should make a sacrifice and decided to give as sacrifice one of their wives – the one to arrive first the next day to bring her husband his breakfast. The first to come was the youngest one. In one hand, she was carrying her child, and in the other – the food. Despite her pleading not to separate her from her child and her many tears, the brothers were inexorable – the building wanted a dear offering and they had to give it, no matter how much it hurt. People say that today still, at night when the river swells, they could hear the crying of the misfortunate mother.
