St. Philip

The memory of St. Philip, one of the Twelve Apostles of Christ, is honored on November 14 with St. Gregory Palamas and on June 30 (Holy council of the Twelve Apostles). He was born near the Sea of Galilee, in the town of Batsaida ("town of fishermen"), where two other apostles were born - Peter and Andrew. Since a small child Philip studied the Holy Scriptures and, after the resurrection of Christ, began to preach the word of God in the lands of Syria and Asia Minor, with his sister Miriam and the Apostle Bartholomew. In the city of Ierapol, the Gentiles captured them and brought them to court with a charge of witchcraft. When the torturers sought to strip their clothes, the virgin Miriam became a flame of fire. When the apostles were crucified (Philip - head down), a terrible earthquake shook the city. At the place where the blood of the Apostle Philip was shed, a vine grew as a sign of the eternal bliss of the saint, who perished for his heavenly teacher. Nameday celebrate: Philippe, Philippa, Filco, Filomir, Justinian, Justinian and others (the name means One who loves horses).
