The fortress Patmos is situated on a hill 436 metres high, on the left bank of Borovitsa River. To reach it, first you have to cross the river with a boat. The fortress was built in the 10th century in order to guard the region, because it was a junction of the main roads, connecting Filipopol with Adrianopol and Mosinopol and the ford of Arda River. The terrain, where the north part of the fortress is situated, is naturally unapproachable. That is why the wall there was built only where the enemy was able to penetrate. The north wall was fortified with two towers – the first was rectangular and the second was horseshoe-shaped. The east and the south walls were natural vertical cliffs 15-20 metres high. Inside the fortress, the foundations of a three-hall basilica and a tower attached to it were found. The total area surrounded by the fortress is 10 decares. | |||
