The Assumption of Holy Mary Cathedral |
 |
The Cathedral of Varna was built in the end of the 19th century from
ashlars from the destroyed fortress walls of the city. Because the
resources for the construction were not enough, the Municipality
organized a lottery and thus collected about BGN 300 000. The
iconostasis was made by the master Ivan Filipov of the town of Debar.
Most of the icons were donated in 1901 by the Russian Tsar Nikolay II.
In January 1890 the church board decided to lift the dome and to put
the bells there, instead of building of a separate belfry. The
construction of the today’s bell-tower finished 1941-1943. The
completed temple is a cross-dome church with impressive size. In
2001 a unique outer illumination, which accented on the magnificence
of the cathedral, was installed.
