The village of Svezhen

The famous Bulgarian village of Svezhen is situated in the western part of Sarnena Sredna Gora Mountain, along the river of the same name and stands of 34 km south-east of Karlovo. Until 1934 its name was Adzhar. Its surroundings were populated in ancient times. Proofs for this are the many Thracian mounds and sanctuaries, remains of fortresses and monasteries. The local people participated actively in the April uprising in 1876. The village was burnt down after its suppressing. Only 100 wooden houses remained. Because of them the old part of the village was declared an archeological and historical reserve. One of the interesting sights in Svezhen is the clock tower, which was built upon the place of the most beautiful master houses, burnt to the ground during the Ottoman raids.
