The church St. Petka Samardjiiska – Sofia

One of churches in the center of Sofia is named after St. Petka – the church St. Petka Samardjiiska (St. Petka of the Saddlers). The church, which was constructed in 11th century, is situated in the real center of the capital. Is was built over a Thracian sanctuary. During the Ottoman yoke the church embraced an area of 400 square meters, while nowadays it has an area of 70 square meters. In 1956, during archeological excavations in the church St. Petka Samardjiiska, the scientists came upon a funeral. A dispute burst out whether this was the body of the Apostle Vassil Levski. The men of science keep saying this is not the funeral of Levski but the legends tell that after being hung the Apostle was re-buried here secretly. The dispute has been regularly calming and bursting out during the years, until 1986 when the Bulgarian Academy of Science adopted a decision for placing a plaque of Levski in the church, but yet the decision is not realized.
