Oriahovo’s Public Holiday

The town of Oriahovo is situated in a picturesque hilly district on the right riverside of Danube River. The region of Oriahovo was inhabited since the high antiquity. The archeological excavations evidence for the existence of settlements of all historical ages – from the Early Neolithic period until the Late Middle Ages. Remarkable treasures as late-Mycenae bronze swords and parts of horse-trappings, remind the Thracian period. The ruins of the antique fortresses Variana, close to the village of Leskovets, and Valeriana, close to the village of Dolni Vadin, bespeak about the vigorous growth of the Roman culture. The medieval fortress Kamaka (the Stone), built in 9th century and existed until 14 century, rises 1 km eastern direction from the town of Oriahovo. Today there is a rectangular two-floor tower from the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom left from the stronghold. During the National Revival Ages Oriahovo became an administrative and business center. The town was the basic platform for goods supply of the Ottoman Empire. A port operated where Austrian, French, Russian and English ships landed. The town was liberated from the Ottoman reign on November 21, 1877. After the Liberation (1878) Oriahovo was characterized by a vivid trade along the Danube River, plentiful cultural and educational life, and first steps of the industry. Orihovo region included two districts – Oriahovo and Byala Slatina, having a population of 74,000 citizens. In the beginning of the 20th century the town became famous for a building complex, influenced by the Western architecture. Nowadays Oriahovo is has an important geostrategic location for the cross-border European partnership.
