Teteven Public Holiday |

Teteven is located in Lovech district, in North Central region. The
monuments found here show that the region was inhabited since the highest antiquity. A lot of mounds are found here situated in the
outskirts of the Vasilyovska Mountain and the Teteven Balkan
Mountain, and along the riverside of the Vit river and its feeders.
The numismatic findings evidence for a Roman settlement. Then came the Slavs and Bulgars. During the years of the Ottoman yoke the town grew fast, but the houses were built so close that one could go through the town over their roofs. In 16th and 17th century the town faced a vigorous growth, and was even called Altın Teteven - Golden Teteven. After 1801 the town started ruin. It was devastated as only 2-3 houses and the monastery left. On November 1 1877 Teteven was liberated from the Ottoman yoke. Today the town is the administrative center of Teteven municipality. The nature here is incredible, extremely variable with unique flora and fauna. The biosphere reserve Tsarichina protects over 600 plant species. A lot of birds may be observed in the Cherniyat rat (The Black Hill) protected area. Teteven is included in the 100 National Tourist Sites of the Bulgarian Tourist Union.
