Todor Burmov is Bulgarian political figure, the first Prime Minister of Bulgaria. Todor Burmov was born on January 2, 1834 in the village of Nova mahala, Gabrovo district. In 1857 he graduated from the Theological Academy in Kiev and became a teacher in Gabrovo. After 1860 he was editor in the newspapers Bulgarski knizhitsi (Bulgarian books), Savetnik (Adviser), and Vreme (Time). During the Temporary Russian Government he was Plovdiv vice-governor and later Sofia governor. From July 17, 1879 until December 6, 1879 he was the Prime Minister of the first Bulgarian Government. In 1881 he became a member of the shortly existed State Council. In 1883 he was a minister of finance in the Cabinet of general Leonod Sobolev, as later for a few days during the coup d’etat in 1885. After the coup d’etat Todor Burmov, along with some other conservators, turned to the pro-Russian Progressive Liberal Party. In 1886 he retired the policy and started an active literary activity – he participated in the edition of the newspapers Vitosha, Bulgarski glas (Bulgarian Voice), and Svetlina (Light). He died on October 25, 1906 in Sofia. | |||
