Zlatitsa

Zlatitsa (Western Bulgaria) is an ancient settlement located in the Zlatitsa-Pirdop valley. The establishment date is not specified. According to the archeological excavations the district was inhabited yet in prehistoric years. There are traces of the Roman culture found here as well. The name of the town came from the gold that was once mined in the Zlatitsa River (“gold” in Bulgarian sounds “zlato”). The river springs out from the Svishti plaz summit, where the Romans used to mine gold. Thanks to the favorable location and strategic position, and the number of fortified towers in Sredna Gora Mountain and Balkan Mountain, and first and foremost to the heroism and the stubborn resistance of the local people, Zlatitsa field fell under the Ottoman reign 30-35 years after Tarnovo. In the second half of 18th century the town faced economic and historical progress that allowed the construction of the town’s clock tower in 1777, and later the Bulgarian Christian church – built in 1859. There are a number of architectural and memorial monuments in Zlatitsa. The Zlatitsa clock tower, which was supplied with a clock mechanism in 1922, is one of the eldest in Bulgaria and symbolic for the town.
