St. Prophet Iliya Monastery

The St. Prophet Iliya Monastery is located on the land of the town of Gorna Oryahovitsa. For many centuries on, the monastery is keeping the Greek Orthodox religion. Legends tell that in 1218 at this monastery died the Bulgarian tzar Boril. St. Prophet Ilya is considered as a protector of the city, as in the monastery vicinities the first settlements of the city of Gorna Oryahovitza started. Since 1995 the monastery’s bell is proclaimed as “The Bell of Life and Earth” and every year on October 24 it is chiming, in order to remind the people about the huge ecological thread and make people think about the future of planet Earth.
