July 18 – Levski’s public holiday

On July 18 the town of Levski celebrates its public holiday. The town dates back to the Ottoman yoke times, and was known as the small village of Karaach (Black elm-tree). In 1897 the village was named after the Apostle of Freedom- Levski. On August 3, 1945 it became the first Bulgarian village to be declared a town after the year of 1944. By a decision of the Municipal Council from 1992 the birthday of the Apostle of Freedom Vasil Levski is declared public holiday of the town. Not long ago a team of archeologists found in the district remains of a Thracian settlement dated to 5th century BC. The settlement spreads on an area of 25 decares. The remains are unique as it was the first time when a building elder than 3000 years covered with roof-tiles decorated as Ancient-Greek pottery was founded.
