25 years without the poet Damyan Damyanov

One of the most beloved contemporary Bulgarian poets – Damyan Damyanov – was born on January 13, 1935 in the town of Sliven. He graduated the local high school and then studied Bulgarian philology at the Sofia University. Later he worked as literature consultant at Narodna mladezh (People’s youth) magazine, editor at Poetry department of the Plamak (Flame) magazine. It was in 1949 when he published his poems for the first time in Slivensko delo (Sliven affair) paper, and later he promulgated his works in the central literature press. Damyan Damyanov was awarded as an honor People’s figure in the sphere of culture, in 1997 he received the Ivan Vazov award for his work. Some of his poem books are Ochakvane (Expectation), Lirika (Poetry), Poema za shtastieto (A Poem about the Happiness), Ti prilichash na salza (You Look Like a Teardrop), Ako nyamashe ogan (If There Was No Fire). His wife is the poetess Nadezhda Zaharieva. Damyan Damyanov died on June 6, 1999 in Sofia at the age of 64.
