The monastery is situated at the foot of the Etropole Mountain of the West Balkan Mountains, some 3 km southeastern of the town of Pravets. It is believed that before becoming a Christian cloister the place has accommodated a Thracian sanctuary. There is no historical data from the early centuries of the Ottoman yoke about the monastery. It is only known that in 18th century it was ruined down and later restored. Once there was a chapel near the existing cloister but now there are no traces left. The monastery complex includes two small buildings – a temple and monks’ part. The church was constructed entirely of stones and is a solid building. The iconostasis was made by masters of the Teteven School, as the icon of St. Georgi from 1869 is of greatest interest. The icon of the church saint – St. Theodor Tiron is almost completely ruined. Another quite impressive feature is the two bas-relieves with two-headed eagles placed above the church’s holy gates. | |||
