Galatan school in Kotel

The Galatan school is an architectural monument in the town of Kotel, dating back to 1869. The house is typical for the Kotel region – two- storey, made of wood. It has preserved its authentic architecture from the National Revival. Once the local school was situated here. It was a centre of the Bulgarian education and enlightening. Nowadays, there is an exhibition of typical woven materials from the region. It is devoted to the weaving art of the Kotel women. The exhibition in the Galatan school presents the development of this art from the simple rag through the classic carpet to the complicated up-to-date forms. Their workmanship is demonstrated on a primitive loom. On the first floor exponents from the Revival and the beginning of the 20th century are exhibited, and on the second floor there are new woven icons and pictures made by the native women. The tradition in their works has been enriched and further developed. The beauty and the great value of Kotel woven materials contribute greatly to the glory of the town.
