One of Bulgaria’s favorite actors Georgi Kaloyanchev (Kalata) passed away at 87 years after a short illness. He was born on January 13, 1925 in Bourgas and started his stage education at the end of the 1940s at the Theater School in Sofia. Right after graduating he became an actor at the National Theater Ivan Vazov. In 1951 he made his debut in the cinema acting in Utro nad rodinata (Dawn Over the Homeland). Later he moved to the Comedy Theater Aleko Konstantinov. He had a series of unforgettable parts in unforgettable films. Some of the most popular ones are Spiro in Specialist po vsichko (Jack-of-All-Trades, 1962), Kondov in Valchitsata (The She-wolf, 1967), the inspector in Inspektorat i noshta (The Inspector and the Night), the juggler in Nai-dalgata nosht (The Longest Night), Giordano Bruno in Galileo Galilei, and many others. Maybe his most famous part is the one of Bai Ganyo in the homonymous film and in Bai Ganyo tragva iz Evropa (Bai Ganyo on His Way to Europe). These became two of Bulgarian most beloved and watched films ever. In 2003, after lots of prizes and honors Kaloyanchev received the big award of the Union of Bulgarian Actors. In 2005 Kaloyanchev took part in the play Spacemen staged especially for his 80th anniversary, where his partner was his great friend and famous Bulgarian actress Stoyanka Mutafova. Kaloyanchev has received many prizes in his career, including Golden Rose and Askeer. Kalata, as all Bulgarians know him, will always be remembered and will bring smiles, even after he is gone. | |||
