Dimitar Miladinov

The prominent Bulgarian Revival revolutionary and his brother Konstantin were born in the town of Struga (now Republic of Macedonia). Dimitar, born in 1810, is 20 years older than his brother. Dimitar studied in the famous Greek high school in the town of Yanina, as the years spent there, played really important role in the formation of his character. Here Dimitar Miladinov got acquainted and fond of the ideas of the Greek Revolution (1821–1828) and became follower of the Greek revolutionaries-democrats. Later Dimitar Miladinov was a teacher in Ohrid, Struga, Bitola, Prilep and Kukus. The wealth of his knowledge made him talented pedagogue, teaching equally well Ancient Greek, Modern Greek, Latin, Philosophy and Mathematics. He was the first Bulgarian to start fighting against the Phanariots, introduced Bulgarian language and theology as school disciplines. His activity on democratizing the education made the Phanariots slander him to the Turkish authorities and Dimitar Miladinov was imprisoned in Constantinople, where he died on January 11, 1862, just four days after his brother Konstantin passed away.
