Varshets has a population of 7,500 people and is located at the foot of the woody northern slopes of the Balkan Range (Stara Planina), in the middle of a valley of the Botunya river. It is situated 90 km north of Sofia and 30 km south of the district center of Montana. Once the town was called The Health Place of Bulgaria because of the warm mineral spring here. Due to its unique scenery and the healing waters (37˚C) Varshets was declared resort as early as in 1850. For more than 150 years people have been healing their heart and nerves, as well as their locomotive system here. The composition of the water has its analogues only in Argentina, Ecuador and India. In addition to its healing mineral waters, the town is known for its crystal clear air, which because of Varshets’ location among wide forests is slightly moist and very calming. Near the town, some 3 km away, a beautiful waterfall is located. At the foot of the famous Todorini kukli peak the fourth biggest Bulgarian monastery raises – the picturesque Klisourski monastery, founded in 1240, during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. | |||
