Kladnitsa monastery St. Nicholas the Wondermaker |
 |
It is located near the village of Kladnitsa, Sofia region, in the southern
part of the Vitosha mountain. The present monastery was built in 1841,
as it formerly rose slightly apart from its current location. The legend
tells that in the times of the Ottoman yoke, rebels of the Kladnitsa
village hid from their persecutors in the monastery. After the rebels
were betrayed, the Turks caught them and very few of them survived,
and the monastery was burned down. However, a brave Bulgarian -
patriot and Christian, managed to make his way even to the sultan, who permitted him to build the monastery again. Near the monastery, the Kladnitsa fortress rose, as it was built sometime in 5-6 century. It is one of the big Bulgarian fortresses with quite a strategic location. As part of the mountain stronghold it has guarded the passes to the fortress of Serdika.
