Bulgarian municipality’s day

October 12 is the official holiday of Bulgarian municipalities. Bulgaria’s administrative structure includes 263 municipalities, united into 28 districts. The first Bulgarian municipality is Bourgas, settled on February 7 1878. Bourgas’ first mayor was Mr. Niko Popov, born October 12 1836. Nowadays, Bulgaria’s biggest municipality is Sofia Municipality with over 1,200,000 people registered here. The representative structure of Bulgarian municipalities is the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria, established in 1996 by 94 municipalities. As of 1999, all the Bulgarian municipalities are members of the Association.
