The town of Belene is located on an area of a thousand-year history. The region of the municipality, as well as the town itself, was inhabited by the ancient Thraces before the year 2000 BC. The culture in these lands was formed under the influence of many ancient civilizations. In the beginning of I century, Belene was ruled by the Romans. Exactly in this period, many fortresses, fortifications, dikes, tunnels and roads were built for the needs of the Roman legions. Over 36 archeological sites from Roman, early-medieval and medieval settlements have been found on the territory of Belene municipality. Among the most attractive ones are the Dimum castrum – an old fortress on the bank of the Danube river, an important roadside and customs station (Stocio Dimensis), the Gurla antique channels, located west and east of Belene, necropolis, remains of the Securiska medieval settlement near the village of Byala Voda, etc. | |||
