Lion’s Head Rock Phenomenon

The Ropotamo natural reserve, besides offering an incredible variety of rare representatives of Bulgaria’s unique flora and fauna, is also famous for its whimsical rock phenomena, located in the valley of the Ropotamo river. One of these phenomena is the Lion’s Head – a rock, resembling the head of an enormous lion, guarding the phenomenon. A legend says that there is a 30-m deep well on top of the rock, in which a golden treasure has been hidden. Therefore, treasure-hunters often wander around these places. But the Lion’s Head is very hard to access. Locals, who have reached the top, say they have seen the ruins of an old building there. They have also found big rock balls, absolutely equal in size, which are thought to have been used as a catapult for beating off unwanted visitors.
