Rock Monastery near Provadia – Shashkunite region |
 |
This interesting monument of culture has been cut into the vertical
steep rocks above the northern district of the town of Provadia, rising
some 30 m above the ground. It consists of a total of 10 cells – a part
of them detached, a part of them in groups. The first group consist of
three cells. It is followed by two detached cells and a second group,
constituting of five cells. In one of them, a small window has been cut
out, opening an incredible view to the beautiful nature outside. There
is also a tomb inside the monastery, but it has most probably been
robbed, since all traces of the supposed funeral have disappeared.
The cells of the monastery are a home of the rock eagle.
