120 years since the outbreak of the Ilinden-Preobrazhensky Revolt

The Ilinden-Preobrazhensko Revolt broke out on August 1 1903. It is considered to be one of the supreme moments in the struggle for liberation of the Bulgarian population from the regions of Macedonia and Odrin. Initially, the revolt broke out in the Bitola revolutionary district, and later on it spread out to the region of Odrin. Despite the heroic fight of the rebels, the Turkish army was far better armed and far bigger in number, so the uprising was easily suppressed. Though lasting for a very short period, the Ilinden-Preobrazhensko Revolt is one of the biggest revolts in Bulgaria’s history by the number of people, who took part in it.
