Petko R. Slaveikov is a prominent Bulgarian writer, poet, publicist,
folklore researcher and public figure. Throughout his life, he worked
actively in many spheres. After Bulgaria’s liberation from the Turkish
Yoke, he became deputy in the Constituent Assembly (1879); one of
the leaders of the Liberal Party in the Principality of Bulgaria; minister
of public education between 28 November and 17 December 1880;
minister of interior between 17 December 1880 and 27 April 1881, as
well as between 29 June 1884 and 31 January 1885. He created many
historical patriotic poems, articles, fables, feuilletons, epigrams, love
poems, memoirs. Petko Slaveikov is considered the founder of
Bulgarian children’s literature. He contributed greatly to the enrichment
of Bulgarian folklore and phylology. He demonstrated exceptional
qualities as a translator.
