This year Easter is celebrated on 8th of April. This is the biggest
holiday in orthodox Christian beliefs. According to them, Jesus Christ
predicted he would be crucified and would rise from the dead in
three days. And when, on the third day after his funeral, Mary
Magdalene went to his tomb, Jesus’s body was missing. Christ had
risen. Each year, Easter is celebrated for three days and is related to
may interesting and original rituals and traditions. One of them is the
coloring of eggs, which are colored on Holy Thursday after the
Divine Liturgy. The first egg is always red. Why? According to one of
the legends, Mary Magdalene, which was healed from the bad spirits
by Jesus, first saw him after he rose from the dead. She starting
traveling around the world telling people about the miracle. When
she arrived in Rome, she went to the palace of the emperor Tiberius.
At that time people had to bring presents to the emperor, but Mary
was very poor, so her gift was an egg. She gave to to Tiberius saying
“Christ is Risen!” The emperor did not believe her and told her” How
could anyone rise from the dead? This cannot happen, just as this
white egg cannot become red.” While Tiberius was saying these
words, the color of the egg Mary Magdalene was holding started to
change into red. Since then, on Easter Christians color eggs in red
and greet each other with the words “Christ is Risen”, to which the
answer is “Indeed He is Risen!”. | |||
