April 20, 1984 – Hristo Prodanov climbed Everest |
 |
Born in the town of Karlovo in 1943, Hristo Prodanov is the first
Bulgarian mountaineer, who climbed Everest, the highest summit in the world, on April 20, 1984. He is the thirteenth man in the world, who
managed to reach the summit without an oxygen mask climbing up the
most difficult route – the western (Nepal) slope, also called the “Mean
Route”. The Bulgarian Hristo Prodanov is the only mountaineer in the
world who managed to climb Everest in April. As of 1953 the summit
has been attacked and climbed only in May, when the climate is
favorable and the nature allows the dare-devils to take their chances.
Even today an April climbing is considered almost impossible. After he
climbed Everest, Bulgaria became the nineteenth country in the world
to have its representative, who has climbed Everest. Hristo died on his
way down from the summit on April 21, 1984.
