Gluhite Kamani (The Deaf Stones)

Gluhite Kamani is a cult rock complex, situated in the northeastern part of the Rhodopi mountain, near the village of Malko Gradishte. It was created by the Thracians a couple of millenia ago. Scientists believe it was one of the biggest Thracian sanctuaries B.C. It consists of a few hundred trapezium-shaped niches, cut into a solid rock block, which rises from the earth like a giant tooth, reaching 30 m in height. The role of these holes is not quite clear as yet, but specialists believe they were used as funeral urns. Some 50 m away from the niches, the megalith tombs are situated, two of which are perfectly preserved. The first one is a 2m long, 1.5m wide premises, cut into the granite rock. This tomb is the start of 33 stairs, which lead to the very top, where the tomb-mausoleum is situated, in which an eminent Thracian leader is buried. The whole funeral complex was surrounded by a solid wall, which foundations could still be seen.
