National Academy for Theater and Film Arts (NATFIZ) "Krastyo Sarafov"

The National Academy for Theater and Film Arts ("NATFA") "Krastyo Sarafov" is the oldest and only state-owned high school for theater and film art in Bulgaria. It started its history as a two-year theater school at the National Theater "Ivan Vazov", after which it develops into the first Bulgarian State Theatrical School in 1948. 22 students in acting and 9 in directing are accepted in the first class, and two years later - 16 more in theatrical studies. Prof. Dimitar B. Mitov was appointed as the first Rector of the State High Theater School. The building in which the School begins its life is located on 43 Tolbuhin Blvd. (nowadays Vasil Levski Blvd.). There are only a few audiences and two learning scenes in it. But soon it becomes difficult to accommodate students and provide them with normal working conditions. In 1951, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the birth of the great Bulgarian artist Krastyo Sarafov, the school was named after his name. And in 1954 it receives a new name - "Higher Institute for Theater Arts" Krastyo Sarafov. In 1955 the Institute receives a new, specially built building, which is located on 108A Rakovski Str. With its three scenes and a larger audience, it offers better opportunities for conducting the learning process. On November 1, 1957, with the comedy by Ivan Vazov, a production of Anastas Mihailov, the Theater of Teaching, one of the main units of the Institute, was opened. Since August 1, 1995, the Academy has received its present name - National Academy for Theater and Film Arts "Krastyo Sarafov". (Source: natfiz.bg Photo: Facebook)
