Medieval church "St. Peter" in the village of Berende

St. Peter is a medieval church in the village of Berende, Sofia, near Godech. Some scholars refer it to the 13th century, others to the 14th century. It was declared a monument of culture of national significance in 1966. The temple is small in size and the building is made of brick stone, referring to a small single-body churches. Part of the church is a necropolis (cemetery) that was used until the early 1980s. Its dimensions are approximately 4.5 x 5.5 m. Its walls are about 0.90 m thick and are devoid of any architectural features and decoration. There is a semicircular apse on the north side, and its vault is covered with stone slabs. The frescoes are one of the few preserved from this period. The mural ensemble is an example of the style and unity of the artistic image. It is believed that it was here that the earliest known painting portrait of Tsar Ivan Assen II was painted in the 13th century on the outside of the church. Today it is completely destroyed. The murals in the temple do not belong to one author, nor are they created at the same time, as evidenced by the difference in the stylistic build-up of images from different parts of the scenes. The church has not yet been restored. (Source: bg.wikipedia.org)
