Celebration day of Dzhebel town |
 |
Dzebel is a town in Southern Bulgaria. It is located in the Rhodope montains, the Kardzhali area, near the town of Momchilgrad. In
ancient times the area was populated by Thracian tribes until the 9th century, when it was included in the borders of the First Bulgarian Empire. It was in the realm of the Roman empire and later - the Byzantium. In the 60s of the 14th century the area was invaded by the Ottomans. After the Balkan war it was aquired to Bulgaria. In 1969 the village of Dzhebel was announced a town. On the Dzhebel Municipality territory is located the Ustra
Fortress. Another local landmark is the Schupenata planina (Broken Mountain). It is a high peak that looks like it lacks a broken piece. The breakage is the result of a tectonic isplacement formed by a vast landslide activated by unimpeded precipitation. The hill is made of highly distorted rocks (pearlite and rhyolite), and underneath there are water-proof marl and clays. As a result of precipitation and deep water, the upward rocks have slipped in the direction of the nearby creek, and thus the mountain has been "broken". The Broken
mountain can be seen
from the road, which leads from Dzehebel to
the village of
Vodenicharsko. In this direction is the Vyatarnia
kamak (the Wind
stone) near Vodenicharsko and the medieval
fortress "Mal Asar"
