Pleven

The 15 May is celebrated by the town of Pleven. It is celebrated since 2001 when, with a decision of the City Council, the date was declared a city holiday. Pleven is the seventh largest city in Bulgaria. It is located in the central part of Moesia and is the administrative center of the Northwestern region. The millennial history of Pleven is built by different tribes and peoples. The earliest evidence of human activity dates back to the end of the New Stone Age (the end of the sixth millennium B.C.) when the farming and stockbreeding tribes lived there. The history of the town of Pleven during the Roman and Early Byzantine era is closely related to the roadside station Storgoziya, the remains of which are preserved to this day. At the end of the second century and the beginning of the third century, Storgozia was already an urban settlement. A complex, consisting of an early Christian basilica and a commercial building north of it, was unveiled. The name of Pleven became world-famous during the Russian-Turkish War of Liberation 1877-78. The five-month fights for its liberation in 1877 are one of the most remarkable pages in the centuries-old history of the city. They are also one of the most significant events in the Liberation War - their length, the number of troops involved, the sacrifices that were made, and above all their decisive role in the course and outcome of the war. More than 140 monuments, museums and mausoleums were built in the vicinity of the city, in memorial to the war victims. The most famous and remarkable among them is the panorama "Pleven Epopee 1877".
