House Museum 'László Nagy'

Memorial museum collection 'László Nagy' - Smolyan was opened on 30.X.1981 in the Gyordzhevata house in district Raikovo, a monument of local architecture of the XIX century. It has a 200 sq. m exhibition area, multipurpose hall with 50 seats and a cinema. The collection presents the life and work of László Nagy (1925- 1978), a prominent Hungarian poet, publicist, translator of Bulgarian folk songs and poetry, artist, winner of the International Botevska Award (1976), honorary citizen of Smolyan (1976). László Nagy was born in the village of Felso-Iszkaz (western Hungary). He studied painting at the Budapest Academy of Arts for several years. He graduated literature in Budapest. Very young he came to Bulgaria with a scholarship to study Bulgarian literature. He spent a lot of time in Smolyan, mastering the local dialect, becoming the best translator of Bulgarian folklore in Hungarian. The great merit of László Nagy to Bulgaria and the Rhodopes is that he made available to Hungarian readers the Bulgarian song and best of Bulgarian poetry. People in Smolyan coincidentally called him and still call him 'The Hungarian of the Rhodope Mountains'.By manuscripts of the poet, translations, drawings, personal belongings and photographs, the museum shows the work of László Nagy in Bulgaria from the late 40s until 1978. At the entrance of the house is mounted bronze bas-relief of Janos Oros - 'The poet with flower'. It was a gift from the Hungarian Embassy, with whose assistance the museum received more exhibits and was furnished a traditional village room from the homeland of László Nagy. In the yard is shown thematic collection 'László Nagy in the works of Bulgarian artists' of paintings, graphics and sculptures. (Photo: smolyan.bg)
