Zaldapa is the largest ancient fortified center in the lands of today's Dobrogea. The fortress known as Dobrudzha Pompeii is located in the area Kale, between the villages Abrit and Dobrin, Dobrich. In earlier publications, and among the local population is known with different names - Abtaatskoto kale, kale Kaz, Dobrin kale, Dobri kale and Hissar fortress, and its name means cold or yellow water. Built in the second quarter of IV c. the Fortification system of Zaldapa operates about 250 years - until the destruction of the city in the late sixth century. The fortress wall surrounds only the wider and higher southern part of the peninsula on which was located the ancient area. Its total length is about 2050 meters and consists of 18 straight sections (curtain) of different lengths. In the era of Antiquity Zaldapa it was briefly the seat of a bishopric and initial outbreak of the largest rebellion against Emperor Justinian the Great (483-565) emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium). It is also the birthplace of the Byzantine commander Vitalian, which is the biggest rebel in the early Byzantine Empire.
