Koznitsa - the reserve of the wild goats |
 |
Koznitsa reserve is one of the most biologically diverse regions in
Bulgaria. In 2008 it was declared a protected area. The relief of the
land is highly hackly with height amplitude of near 1500 meters, as the protected area covers an area of 6501.5 decares. Large age-old forests of beech, white pine, spruce and fir-tree can be seen there. The most famous tree is the Big Fir Tree which has a circumference of the trunk of 1.5 meters at near 6 meters height. The name of the reserve comes from the Bulgarian word “koza”, which means goat. The reserve is one of the oldest areas with wild goats in Bulgaria. Typical for the region are also the brown bears, whose number is significant. Since several years, archaeologists have been working in the protected area. There they have found the remains of ancient fortresses and a Thracian sanctuary in which they have discovered valuable findings as pottery and others. A large number of graves built-in the rocks have been also found there.
