Financial news

Unemployment in Bulgaria in November 2018 was 5.4 per cent, unchanged from October and down from 5.7 per cent in November 2017, according to seasonally-adjusted figures released by European Union statistics agency Eurostat. The figure of 5.4 per cent in November 2018 represented about 181 000 people, according to Eurostat. The October and November figures were slightly higher than the 5.3 per cent unemployment recorded in Bulgaria in August and September 2018. Between November 2017 and November 2018, unemployment among youth in Bulgaria rose from 11 per cent to 14.2 per cent. These figures represent an increase from 19 000 to 22 000 under-25s who were jobless. The euro area (EA19) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 7.9 per cent in November 2018, down from eight per cent in October 2018 and from 8.7 per cent in November 2017. This is the lowest rate recorded in the euro area since October 2008.

Bulgaria's economic growth is expected to speed up from 3.5% last year to 3.9% in 2019 on the back of moderate fiscal stimulus and acceleration of investment activity, Italian financial group UniCredit said "Among the planned measures, the boost in infrastructure spending and the increase in public sector wages are expected to be the most effective in supporting domestic demand in 2019," UniCredit said in a quarterly macroeconomic report on Central and Eastern Europe. Bulgaria's gross domestic product growth is then expected to slow down to 3.0% in 2020 as a result of the cyclical downturn anticipated in advanced economies and tighter financing conditions. A sharp drop in export volumes to Turkey was among the major hurdles to Bulgaria's economic expansion in 2018. The forecast acceleration of the Turkish economy in the next few years is expected to limit the decrease in Bulgaria's exports to the country in 2019, before they start increasing in 2020. As Bulgaria's unemployment rate is projected to drop below 5% this year, job creation is expected to lose some momentum.

The Austrian company Kapsch, which won the contract for the development of the toll system, has come up with a stance on the problems of introducing electronic vignettes. "According to the Road Infrastructure Agency (API) contract, the scope of the work includes the delivery of control vehicles, a central computerized system for electronic vignettes and tolling, and an operational data center, an online store for charging products for use on the road network (not including the webpage bgtoll.bg), 500 self-service and mobile terminals," Kapsch said in its position. The company claims to have provided a fully functioning, tested and approved system. Prior to submitting the system, starting in September 2018, together with API and the World Bank, as an official advisor, Kapsch had conducted extensive end-to-end tests for each component, application, functionality and subsystem subject to the contract . These extensive tests confirmed that the system is fully operational.

The Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) reported over 90% growth in revenues to BGN 312 million for the nine months of last year. For this period there was growth in the profit - before taxes it was BGN 137.7 million, or an increase of about 15% compared to a year earlier. This shows the company's report published by the finance ministry. The enormous increase in revenues is mainly due to the dividends paid by the BEH companies, the biggest contribution coming from the Kozloduy NPP. The sale of the energy exchange for BGN 5.2 million on the Bulgarian Stock Exchange also affected the revenues of BEH. The Maritza-Iztok Mines has contributed with a profit of BGN 3.5 million and has also transferred 50% of its dividend to BEH. Another state energy company - Bulgargaz - has recorded profit. Nevertheless, the company registered a drop in its net income to BGN 4.1 million for the nine months of 2018. For comparison, in the same period a year earlier they were almost BGN 20 million. NEK is also performing with a declining trend in its results. The company reported a negative financial result for the nine months amounting to BGN 153.4 million, compared to the same period in 2017, when the decline was by BGN 62.4 million. However, Bulgartransgaz and the Electricity System Operator show positive results, whose profit for the nine month was BGN 23.4 million.

Germany and France will deepen their 55-year-old alliance as the main defenders of European Union cooperation seek to counter forces tearing at the bloc’s bonds. Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron will sign a treaty in the German border town of Aachen on Jan. 22. The pact, which was signed off by Merkel’s cabinet on Wednesday, calls for joint efforts on security, economic and environmental policy and extends the landmark Elysee agreement between the former adversaries from 1963. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said the Aachen Treaty is meant to send a clear message at a time when populists are campaigning for what he called “national egotism.” As Germany and France renew their vows ahead of the U.K.’s exit from the EU, the risks to the bloc’s solidarity remain acute. These were underscored by efforts to forge a Euroskeptic alliance ahead of European Parliament elections in May. Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini is meeting Wednesday with Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of Poland’s governing party, in the latest stop of his recruiting drive.

The U.S. is in danger of losing its triple-A sovereign credit rating later this year, Fitch said on Wednesday, warning an ongoing government shutdown could soon start to impact its ability to pass a budget. A stalemate between President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats over a spending package to fund nine government agencies entered its 19th day on Wednesday. It comes at a time when lawmakers are deeply divided over the president's demand for money for a border wall. "I think people are looking at the CBO (Congressional Budget Office) numbers. If people take the time to look at that you can see debt levels moving higher, you can see the interest burden in the U.S. government moving decidedly higher over the next decade," James McCormack, Fitch's global head of sovereign ratings said. "There needs to be some kind of fiscal adjustment to offset that or the deficit itself moves higher and you're essentially borrowing money to pay interest on the debt. So there is a meaningful fiscal deterioration there, going on the United States," he added.

China’s State Grid Corp will invest 38.7 billion yuan ($5.66 billion) to build five pumped hydro storage plants across the country, in an effort to ease the stranded power system amid Beijing’s push to boost clean energy consumption. Pumped hydro storage plants could be used as reservoirs when demand is low and as hydro power stations to generate electricity when consumption picks up. The five plants, located in the provinces of Jilin, Hebei, Shandong and Zhejiang, and far west region of Xinjiang, will have a combined capacity of 6 gigawatts (GW) and are expected to be launched by 2026, the State Grid Corp said. The state-backed company currently has 19.23 GW of pumped hydro storage capacity and 30.15 GW under construction. The investment came as China has vowed to boost large-scale energy storage capacity over the next decade and launch at least 40 GW of pumped hydro storage plants by 2020. Energy storage facilities, including pumped hydro storage plants, compressed air energy storage and bulk storage with batteries, could help prevent renewable power from being wasted when there is not enough transmission capacity to absorb the electricity.
