The Chiprovski Monastery

The Chiprovski Monastery St. Ivan Rilski is on the left bank of Chiprovska Ogosta River, about 6 km Northeast of the town of Chiprovtsi. The monastery was established in the X century and was one of the 30 monasteries of the First Bulgarian Kingdom, which helped the spreading of the Christianity. During nine centuries it was an important literature and educational center, and its existence continued after the Magyar invasions in XIII and the Ottoman slavery. The monastery was the basic shelter and supporting point during the uprisings of Konstantin and Fruzhin in the XV century and the uprising of Chiprovtsi in XVII century. There were six fires and destructions according to the chronicles of the monastery. The monastery complex consists of a church, three-storied tower and a residential building, surrounding the yard from south. The church is with one dome, constructed of stones. There is a double-ark window with an image of a cross and a rose on the external side of the north wall. There is a stone tower with a belfry in the yard. In its ground floor is the bone-vault, where the remains of some of the victims of the uprising in Chprovtsi are kept. In 1879 the chapel of St. Anastasiy Aleksandriyski was built in the south building of the monastery. Today the monastery is part of the Vidin Eparchy. https://maps.app.goo.gl/7Dyax7gJ7ne8k8pt7
