Rock Phenomenon Devil Bridge – Borino

The Devil Bridge near Borino (West Rhodope Mountain) is also called Roman Bridge, as some of the explorers date it to the Roman Ages. It is a one-vault bridge, 30 m in length, 3 m wide and 6 m high. It crosses the Devinska River as a bow. It was constructed without mortar link in the bases. The highest part of the vault is supported only by a few half-processed square stones. Its constructor has probably been a great architect and engineer, as with mathematics preciseness he has placed its bases in a way to be kept during the centuries and to be in a full harmony with the surrounding nature. The Bridge was a part of the road to Philipi, and by 1912 it was a border line, and on the west was Bulgarian, and on the east – Turkey. The Devil Bridge is located between the Yagodinska cave and Borino in the Haidushki dol (Haiduk glen) district. According to the legend only the devil could cross the bridge and that is where its name comes from. The story tells that the Bridge is the symbol of reconcilement of two brothers that fought for years for their father’s lands.
