The village of Draganovo

The village of Draganovo arose in the end of 12th – the beginning of 13th century and was named after its founder – Dragan, who lived here yet before the Ottoman yoke. Draganovo is situated on the right side of the Yantra River, Gorna Oryahovitsa municipality. People here used to be occupied in farming, animal breeding, gardening and fishing. But as the population was quite numerous, it was hard to make a living with this occupation. The more alert and enterprising men went working abroad. Generally they started buying lands for gardening and many of them settled abroad. A lot of local people settled in Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, and even Australia. Those who remained in Draganovo were occupied in agriculture and animal breeding. Today there are about 3000 people living in the village. The People’s Community Center Saedinenie (Union) 1888, one of the evidences for the local men’s cultural heritage, was established in 1888 by Petko Kolarov (the father of the writer Asen Raztsvetnikov), Marin Penkov, Petar Popatanasov, and Ivan Bochev. There Dimitar Papazov conducted the mixed choir for schooled singing, from which later on two choirs were formed: the female choir for schooled singing conducted by Plamen Kabakchiev, and the male choir conducted by Dimitar Slavov. Today there are a male choir, a female folklore choir, a group for Old City Songs, a chant group, a theatrical company, children’s theatrical cast developed here. The Community Center has a library with 14,069 exhibits
