The Clock Tower in Rakitovo

The Clock Tower in Rakitovo (south Bulgaria, Pazardjik district) is a kind of architectural monument. It is located at the northwestern slope of the Bardo hill, near Rakitovo. The tower consists of two parts with stone brickwork, and is 18.60 m high, and the walls are 80 cm thick. The wooden drums lie at 1-meter interval. The shape is octagonal, the roof is conical and is covered with sheet iron. The clock has two faces with Roman numerals. The inner staircase was replaced by a new one in 1960. The construction of the tower was financed by two local men. Once there was a stone plate with an Arab inscription on it. The text said that in order to show time to local people the construction of a clock with lots of angles started. The constructor of the tower was Malik Chelebi, who raised it in 1872. Thus the wish of the donors Veli Hadji Mussa Efendi and his son Hafaz Hussein Efendi was fulfilled. Today the Clock Tower in Rakitovo is a historical monument of national importance.
