The Preslavska Mountain

The comparatively low Preslavska Mountain is a picturesque part of the Predbalkan. The northern part of the limestone chain is gradually tailing into the Danube River plain, and the southern part passes into the Karnobat and Aytos heights. The highest peak is Golyama Vashkadalnitsa – at the altitude of 723 m. Veliki Preslav, which was the capital of Bulgaria during knyaz Boris’ reign, is located in the outskirts of the Preslavska mountain. The vegetation here is represented mainly by deciduous trees as the Conker tree (Aesculus hippocastanum) reaching 30 m in height. The Dervish passage is also situated in the Preslavska Mountain. A fortress called Beloto Gradishte has protected the passage and the road crossing it. The legend tells that once upon a time, here, the summer mansion of the Bulgarian kings was placed. The palaces were really rich, and a fountain made of gold was fascinating the guests. The underground kept the king’s treasury, filled with fortune of all parts of the world.
